Parents and Carers

As a parent or carer, we know supporting a young person through emotional or mental health challenges can be tough and often overwhelming. At Future SELPH, we provide free and tailored support to young people aged 16 to 25 who are experiencing difficulties with their mental and emotional wellbeing.

Each of our community youth teams across the Wakefield District provides a range of tailored services that are completely free and confidential. Online, in-person, one-to-one and group support is available.

      Making a referral

It’s quick and easy to refer your child or a young person you care for to one of our community teams. Just contact the team that is convenient for them. You can find contact details on the map above.

      How it works

Once we receive a referral, we will contact the young person within a few days for an initial appointment where we can chat through what difficulties they’ve been having.

From there, we can start working on an action plan to address those challenges together and talk about the types of support available so they can decide on what they feel might be best.

Once the programme of support starts, we monitor progress through regular meetings and reviews with the young person at a convenient time and way for them.

      Outcomes

Young people benefit in several ways from our service including:

      • More resilience and confidence to face life’s challenges, reducing the need for ongoing support from adult mental health or crisis services
      • Improved achievements and confidence at school or work
      • Better, more positive social and emotional relationships with others
      • Improved self-esteem and aspirations

      Consent

Please ensure that you have the consent of the young person you are referring to do so. As we are funded by Conexus Healthcare, all information is handled and processed in line with their policies. Please note that the link will take you away from this website.

      Urgent and extra support

Young people can access confidential talking therapies for anxiety and depression free on the NHS and refer themselves directly without needing to visit a GP. Turning Point is your local NHS Talking Therapies service.
